You could be injured by a drunk driver on any day of the year that you leave your house. Yet some days on the calendar carry a much higher risk of this than others. This is due to a tendency for increased alcohol consumption on certain dates. For a lot of people, drinking is a very social activity, so they tend to consume (and overconsume) on specific days of the week or certain holidays. While many of those who celebrate with drink will make sure not to pick up their car keys until they are sober, too many are willing to take chances. Here are some of the dates you should be wary of if you're going to be on the road:

Special events

The Super Bowl is well known for increased alcohol consumption nationwide, but there are plenty of locally significant sporting events that result in locally increased alcohol consumption and locally increased risks of drunk driving. Watching the sports calendar is never a bad idea.Music concerts, too, come with their fair share of alcohol consumption.  Many people drink at them, and the location and timing mean they often rely on their cars to get home. Similarly, festivals are another big risk, whether local or major, as the drink often flows all day or for several days.

Public holidays and long weekends

Public holidays can be extremely dangerous on the roads. New Year’s, for instance, sees fatal drunk driving incidents rise 89%, while the Labor Day, Independence Day and Memorial Day holidays all see figures close to 50% above average. Some of these holidays involve several days of drinking and often long journeys. Some people get a buildup of alcohol in their system over long weekends, which can leave them still intoxicated when they set out to drive home in the morning. Add in the tiredness of late nights and long drives, and many of those drivers are fatigued as well as not being fully sober.Understanding that some days carry a higher risk of drunk drivers sharing the road with you than on other days allows you to take extra care. This can reduce the chance you fall victim to a drunk driver and are left needing to claim compensation.
